STUDENTS WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES ACCESSING FOREIGN LANGUAGES Learning disabilities affect the way that an individual takes in, retains, or expresses information. Different types of learning disabilities can impact spoken or written language, spelling, organizational skills, memory, among others. A student can be strong in listening comprehension but poor in reading comprehension or vice versa.
Research shows there is a link between native and foreign language learning. Mostly it shows up in phonological difficulties (e.g. problems with tasks involving putting sounds together and pulling sounds apart in spoken and written language). Students with learning disabilities may do fine in other classes, but their difficulties emerge when in a language class. Often the phonological difficulties are present in their native language as well (Granschow and Sparks 1995). Some people may have difficulties reading in some languages but not in others because of the complexity of the different language systems (e.g. frequency of word occurrence, size of vocabulary, etc.)

DEAF and HARD OF HEARING STUDENTS ACCESSING FOREIGN LANGUAGES
Hearing disabilities affect people of all ages and can occur at any age. The degree of loss ranges from mild to very significant. Each individual’s adjustment to hearing loss is different, depending on the degree and type of loss, the age of onset and individual coping skills. Some people with hearing disabilities can be assisted by hearing aids. People with mild hearing loss may be able to participate in group and individual conversations with little adaptation. People with more significant hearing disabilities usually have difficulty understanding speech from a distance of more than a few feet and may not be able to follow group conversations, with or without the aid of an amplifier. People with profound hearing disabilities cannot interpret oral language and speech, even with amplification of sound. In the United States, the two main approaches to signed language for Deaf or hard of hearing individuals are American Sign Language (ASL) and Manual or Signed English. ASL has its own grammar, vocabulary and syntax; Manual or Signed English uses signs but is based on English word order and grammar. Many people who are Deaf do not consider themselves to be disabled. Rather, they base their identity on the fact that they share a visual language and a unique culture. Tips for the Teachers: * For those students that do want to practice lipreading and speaking, involve them in the lessons and hire speech therapists or cued speech interpreters (see below) to assist with the pronunciation and comprehension as needed * Find alternative assignments for oral presentation and listening comprehension activities if the student is not interested in the speaking components of the language. These alternatives could include: tutoring with local Deaf individuals to learn the local sign language of a host country or more reading/writing activities such as with transcribed audiocassette activities or computer assisted language learning software * Videotape the students at the beginning of the assignment/class and at the end to compare and assess their progress * Make use of computer programs that have activities for reading and writing comprehension * Use visual cues or pictures with words when describing new vocabulary or concepts * Hire interpreters and notetakers for the students * Follow guidelines for communicating with hard of hearing people * Learn fingerspelling to communicate some words or use a writing surface frequently * Incorporate into lessons flashcards and other visual language learning games * Use videotapes/movies that have subtitles in the foreign language when possible.
